Why Ross?

Ross Nusser isn’t just running for City Council—he’s a lifelong Iowa City resident who is deeply committed to the well-being of our community. A lifelong resident of Iowa City, Ross grew up on River Street and attended Lincoln Elementary before graduating from the Iowa City Community School District in 2004. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of Arizona and returned to Iowa City in 2008. After starting his career in retail, Ross helped to co-found Urban Acres Real Estate, where he now partners with his wife, Hope. Together, they reside in the Northside neighborhood with his two children, proud Shimek Sharks and Southeast Little Hawk. The family enjoys the vibrant Northside community and its proximity to Downtown, where Hands Jewelers—Ross’s family business since 1853—is located. Ross knows firsthand the unique challenges and opportunities that shape District C and has a personal stake in building a brighter future for all families in Iowa City.

 

Ross believes in Responsible Leadership that listens to the community, values collaboration, and takes action. His priorities—affordable housing, expanded mental and behavioral health resources, support for those in need, and local food initiatives—are not just campaign promises but issues he has worked on throughout his career.

Ross brings a blend of real-world experience and Community-Minded leadership to his campaign. With a background in real estate and over 14 years of nonprofit work, including his leadership roles at Successful Living, Community and Family Resources and The Housing Fellowship (fmr.), he has a track record of helping work tough issues like affordable housing and mental and behavioral health care. Ross has served on the Johnson County Comprehensive Plan Committee (2016) and Compensation Commission, demonstrating his ability to navigate complex decisions and build consensus.
